Great Space Cafe is located in the iconic Collins Place Plaza, in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD. The I.M Pei designed plaza’s multi-layered cascading floor plates and glass atrium roof creates a space that is visually engaging and filled with abundant natural light – a truly great space.
Inbetween Architecture worked closely with the cafe owner and contractor to design and document a design for this 90m2 cafe fit-out. The front-of-house space took direction from the plaza and features a cascading display and service bench that references the I. M. Pei design.
A balance between take away and eat-in service areas is achieved by opening the service bench to both front and side and by arranging a combination of loose furniture and booth seating that can be reconfigured in response to demand. Generous behind counter workspace maintains the busy ambiance of this inner city cafe while maintaining a comfortable work flow for staff to move within both the counter and the cafe itself.
A restrained base palette is combined with the feature cascading display and service bench to further emphasise this element. A contemporary selection of robust fittings, fixtures and finishes ensure a versatile and functional space.
